First brought from China and planted in 1824, it was actually twodecades later, in 1867 that James Taylor (a Scotsman), planted,produced and exported the first batch of tea. FolloChelcey Ventures Pvt. Ltd.d closely by agroup of planters, desperate to revive the plantation industry(having previously failed with Coffee), this is widely accepted asthe birth of ‘Ceylon Tea’. Almost two centuries later, Ceylon Teahas been established as a brand, growing from strength to strength,to become one of the most popular and sought after names in tea,today.Going back two and a half decades from the present, Harsha Gamage,a young man studying Medicine in Russia, decided to promote SriLankan origin products among the fellow students, by importing andmarketing this refreshing and rejuvenating drink in his surroundingvicinity and then expanding to Eastern Europe. Having completed hisMedical Degree, along with many years’ experience trading in Tea,he made a life-changing decision, setting aside the former andchoosing to pursue a career in the latter. Thus, in 1993,ChelceyHoldings (Pvt.) Ltd., with the Chelcey Tea Company as a subsidiary,was established.Expanding its portfolio, the Chelsey Tea Company now has a range ofbrands under its umbrella, catering to the wide-ranging tastes ofits various target groups, which are; Chelcey Premium Tea, Daniels,Malitihma and Meliora.While procuring its teas from various sources, Chelcey Holdingsalso has its very own Tea Factory and Plantation, located atKukuleganga in the Rathnapura District boardaring the Rakwanamountain range, where high quality low grown  teas are grown,plucked, sorted and processed, prior to being packed and send it toSri Lanka tea board acution.From the Plantation to Packing, the Tea moves along the process,still within the Chelcey Holdings umbrella, yet getting ever closerto you, our consumer. Our Packing Factory in Kahathuduwa, locatedwithin the Colombo district, handles all the packing of the teas,in preparation for distribution throughout the island and all overthe world.From Tea to other consumer goods, the Chelcey Holdings portfolioalso includes a range of essential and commodity items, packagedand distributed by the Chelcey ‘Trading Arm’, under the brand name‘Daniels Good Food’, for a variety of products, including Papadam,Noodles, Bottled Water, Soy Sauce, Chickpeas, Vinegar, Curry poweretc.Also under the Chelcey Umbrella and along the same lines, ChelceyVentures handles Consumer Imports, importing and distributing arange of consumer products like Coriander, Kadala Parippu and CornFlour.Diversifying further the company moved in to the manufacture &importing medicine under the Aviva Healthcare.Being a qualifiedHealth Professional, the Chairman of Chelcey Holdings - Dr. HarshaGamage, is very strict and uncompromising on the quality of allproducts manufactured, imported and distributed by his company.Lastly, closing off the loop which is the Chelcey group, is theTravel Arm – Chelcey Travels. Catering primarily to foreignpartners, agents, suppliers and dealers etc. of the group, ChelceyTravels also accepts FIT & GIT bookings, handling all aspect ofthe visit, including Airport Transfers, Hotel Bookings, Tours andany other additional services the guests may require.
