Scada is short for supervisory control and data acquisition. Scada is the name given to a measurement and control system. These systems monitor and or control chemical, physical and transport processes. The control function is done automatically by either a remote terminal unit (rtu) or programmable logic controller (plc) .
Meters, pressure transducers, floats, and other sensory devices are referred to as points. There are two types of points. Actual wired inputs are called hard points and inferred, calculated or derived
Points are called soft points. These points feed status information to the rtu / plc. The rtu / plc translates the information to a readable format and forwards the information to the scada server which in turn transmits the information to a control room operator. This information is sent in such a way as to allow the operator, if necessary to override the normal rtu / plc function controls.
The use of a scada system allow for quick information transfer. Pre-programming of emergency function as Open Control Solutionsll as the ability for an operator to be remotely contacted in case of an emergency. An operator is now located in the control room as versus at the remote equipment. Data can be stored on the scada server for future reference. User developed interface screens let the operator know whats happening at the site as well as aiding in and reducing time consuming trouble shooting. As an option remote video can be installed with a scada system allowing a visual of the site from a central control area.
