Company Description

Cometal EE was a Mozambique Government owned enterprise till May 1996. In the privatisation process Tata Holdings Mozambique Limitada acquired 51% of the company shares and balance remained with State for future alienation. After privatisation the name of the company was changed to Cometal SARL. The historical background of the company before privatisation is as under. - In 1957 the company was set up in Maputo as a limited company and produced steel structures and tanks. - In 1963 a new workshop was developed in the outskirt of Maputo city named Machava to produce railway rolling stock along with steel structures. - In 1978 the company was nationalized. Existing production facility : Working relationship developed with Genrec Engineering (Pty) Ltd, Wadeville, South Africa to fabricate products jointly confirming to ISO standard. Working relationship developed with Kaeffer Thermal (Pty) Ltd, Isando, South Africa to blast and paint products jointly conforming to ISO standard. The inspection and quality control facility run by Unit Inspection Company of South Africa independently inside the plant. *(The covered area consists of seven high bays at crane level of 10-12mt high and equipped with 5-20MT overhead crane facility on each bay. The bays are 100mt long and 12/24mt wide. The bay no. seven is 150mt long and equipped with fCOMETAL SARL 20MT capacity cranes.) Besides Railway wagons manufacturing or repair, the plant facility is capable of fabrication of steel and aluminium structures. The project value was over US$ 4.80 million. The work was executed under Portuguese, French consultants. - The rehabilitation of hydraulic gates at Macarratane on river Limpopo was done in 97-98. The project value was over US$ 2.60 million. The work was executed under French consultant. - The rehabilitation of irrigation system on down stream of river Limpopo was done 99-01. The contract value was US $ 2.26 million. The work was executed under French consultant. - Supply of wagons to Tanzania and Mozambiquan Railways. - Conversion of Railway wagon to dual braking system was done under technical assistance of Indian Railway. The contract value was US$ 0.90 million. - Working in Joint Venture with Genrec Engineering (Pty) Ltd. and making supplies to Mozal Aluminum Smelter in Maputo. The fabrication done at the facility includes supply of Pots to Mozal as well as Hillside Aluminum plant in South Africa. - The fabrication of fume extraction plant ducting of Mozal, Aluminum plant is in progress. The contract value is over US$ 0.90 million. The technology partners is French consultant. - Over the years the plant facility had gone through diversification process like production of heavy cargo trailers, crane structures, material handling facility etc. - In 1996 the company was privatised and taken over by Tata Holdings Mozambique Limitada.
