Company Description

MBI - established 1964 - played an active role as investor in the maritime industry for two

decenniums for the larger NorMBI AS Norwaygian tanker ship owning groups.

MBI was acquired in 1984 by Tom Naess who had worked as ship-, commodity- and

maritime consultant with Oslo based R S Platou AS, Fearnleys AS and Bassoe Commodities.

In the period 1978 to 1985 MBI coordinated the purchase and import of 12 million tons of

bulk cement to Saudi Arabia on behalf National Cement Company. MBI designed, built

and operated a 42,000 dwat floating storage/transit terminal with selfunloading and bagging

equipment. All cement procurement was on FOB terms. The sea transport was performed by

MBI acquired gearless bulk carriers solely for this trade of cement in bulk..

1984 MBI initiated and administered UNIBULK – a charter operating partnership (bulk pool)

between John Fredriksen, Oslo; Salén AB, Stockholm and A.F. Klaveness, Oslo.

1984/1988 MBI was exclusive chartering agent and consultant for INTER-MARITIME

GROUP, Geneva for its oil tanker operations and lifting crude to its refinery in Antwerp.

1986/1988 MBI entered a close working relationship with ship owner group Teekay Shipping.

1988/1997 MBI had chartering and S&P business with two Vietnamese shipping companies.

1989: MBI contracted two 1240 TEU container ships in Poland for own account.

1990/1992 MBI represented Fearnleys, Oslo as its Vice President in an “internationalisation

program” directed at South Africa and South East Asia.
