The plant is perennial, growing 12 feet high having fine leaves, fleshy taproot and bearing yellow flowers. The liquid that exudes from the plant turns into a dark/deep yellowish brown resin when dried. This property of the resin has led to it being termed as ‘Mistress of Spices’ and ‘Devil’s Dung’. Medicinal Uses: Assafoetida is prominently used as an ingredient in medicine to treat various stomach ailments such as spasms, indigestion and constipation. Heeng also helps in treating respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis and cough. Hing is an effective remedy for curing impotency, hysteria, cold, fever, deafness, memory loss, jaundice, arthritis, piles, anus itching and toothache. It also helps in regulating women’s menstrual cycle and relieving the pain during menstruation. Assafotida is further beneficial in curing nervous conditions, lowers blood cholesterol and blood pressure.
